The Maule Region

In May, I went on a trip with some of the other UDD international students and Global Ambassadors to the Maule Region, about 6 hours south of Santiago. The nature there was incredible and I feel like it was worth spending the night on a bus to get to see it!

The first thing we did when we arrived was a trek at 7:30am. Even though it was very cold, I think this was my favourite part of the trip, as the scenery was beautiful and we saw dogs and ponies. :)

At the end of the trek we arrived at some thermal springs. The water was so so hot, which was really nice at first, but made me start sweating after a little while!

After trekking back to the bus, we went off to Laguna del Maule, on the border between Chile and Argentina. The lagoon is beautiful, but underneath lies the second most dangerous volcano in the world. If it exploded, it would destroy the whole of South and North America.

The next place we went to was Mirador Monjes Blancos (white monks lookout). I think it is called that because there are white rocks there that kind of look like people? Anyway, the views are really impressive.

Then we went to the Cascada Invertida (inverted waterfall). The guide told us that if we got too close to the edge and made one wrong move, it would be "instant death"... Safe to say that I stayed well back!

The last place we went to was some more hot springs. However these ones were not actually hot, which was disappointing!

It was a great trip, and we packed a lot into those 24 hours. All the things we saw were an example of how much amazing nature there is to see here in Chile.

Cerro Santa Lucía

About a month ago I went to Cerro Santa Lucía. It's within walking distance from where I live so I don't know why I didn't go earlier! It's a big hill with lots of little parks, statues and monuments, and it's a really beautiful and amazing place.

Here are some of the better pictures I took there:

This is definitely my favourite place that I've been to in Santiago, and I'm going to try to go back before I leave next month.

Viña del Mar

A week after my day out to Valparaíso, I went to Viña del Mar, a city about two hours away from Santiago. I had had a difficult week, so it was nice to spend a day in a new place to take my mind off things. It's not such a touristic city in terms of sightseeing (the main reason people come here is for the beach), but I found it an interesting place nonetheless.

I also did the Tour4Tips tour here, like I did in Valparaíso. Again, I feel like it was a very good way to see the city.

It was another long walk from the bus station to the starting point of the tour, but I took some pictures on my walk through the city and in the time I had before the tour started.

The starting point of the tour was the Reloj de Flores, a clock made of flowers which was built for the World Cup in 1962.

Then we walked to the Palace of Cerro Castillo, the official summer residence of the president.

After that, we looked at the Brunet Castle, which was built in a French style. It was very impressive to see.

Finally we went to Quinta Vergara, the biggest park in the city. The Viña del Mar International Song Festival takes place in the amphitheatre here.

Overall, Viña del Mar is a very nice city and I enjoyed the tour. I'm not sure I'll have the time to go back there, but I'm glad that I went.
